Websense vs SurfControl, Secure Computing Websense is a web
filtering and web security software with so many advantages over other competitors, such as SurfControl and Secure Computing, that even smaller organizations prefer it. Please see below a Websense customer case study, and an Internet Content Filtering test, which show why Websense is the preferred solution:

New York Courts Finds SmartFilter 'Behind The Curve,' Chooses Websense Solution over SurfControl
The New York State Unified Court System, consisting of 5,000 employees in pursuit of serving
justice, needed an accurate, robust employee Internet management product to manage its workers' Web access. Originally a SmartFilter customer, the Court System felt the product was outdated and incomplete,
which resulted in substandard Internet filtering. "SmartFilter was always behind the curve with updates and allowed access to really inappropriate material," said Tim Cronin, senior computer
applications programmer for the New York State Courts. "When the database became more than two weeks old and the update failed, all Internet access was completely blocked. This usually happened on the
weekend, which meant someone had to come in and attempt to manually download the database and install the updates." In addition to inaccurate Internet filtering, the New York State Courts also
experienced slower Internet response time as a result of the SmartFilter implementation, which affected work-related Web activity. Finally, discontent with the ineffective filtering product, the organization
decided to evaluate SurfControl SuperScout and Websense Enterprise. "The SuperScout database was simply not up to Websense standards," said Cronin. "They promised it would be by 2002, but
there was no guarantee, and we needed a best-of-breed employee Internet management solution immediately." The New York State Courts selected Websense Enterprise for its superior EIM database and ease
of administration. The software's database quality - verified as the top-ranked database in the EIM market, according to eTesting Labs -results in reliable Web filtering, which helps the organization
automate its Internet access policy accurately and easily, without negatively affecting network performance. Websense Outscores Competition in Enterprise-Class Internet Content Filtering Test
VeriTest study rates Websense Web Security Suite highest overall in terms of internet filtering web security accuracy, effectiveness, and performance.
In a recent study that compared the effectiveness of internet filtering software, Websense outperformed competing products from Secure Computing and Surf Control, scoring highest overall. VeriTest, a
testing service of Lionbridge, conducted the study to compare enterprise-class internet content filtering applications.
The study focused on internet filtering, web security accuracy, effectiveness,
and performance. Three tests were performed: blocking effectiveness testing, specific malicious and spyware URL testing, and non-HTTP protocol testing.
Lionbridge's VeriTest team tested more than
400,000 URLs against internet filtering software products for accuracy and blocking effectiveness. Overall, Websense scored 92 points, while the products from SurfControl and Secure Computing scored 65 and
59 points, respectively. Websense outperformed both products in terms of the number of unique categories identified. Websense identified 85 categories, whereas SurfControl identified 47, and Secure Computing
identified 69. Websense also scored highest in the malicious and URL spyware testing, winning in all four categories: spyware URLs, URLs used in spyware backchannel communications, URLs used in deploying
keyloggers and Trojan horses, and URLs used in phishing.
Websense dominated the competing products in the non-HTTP protocol filtering area: "Websense was the only product in its 'out-of-the-box'
configuration to provide easy blocking of non-HTTP related protocols, such as those used by instant messaging (IM) applications, peer-to-peer (P2P), anonymous browsing utilities, and streaming media.
Websense demonstrated the ability to block these applications from communicating within the test network in almost every scenario tested," the study stated. Please contact us for:
