3-Way Actuated Ball Valves

PVC & CPVC Diverter or Sampling Valves -- Using compressed air or hydraulic power for actuation

3-way actuated Ball Valves in PVC and CPVC for acid and other aggressive chemicals, shown here with automatic spring return

Actuator Features:

Valve at right is shown with TABVS Air x Spring automatic fail-safe actuator. Air is used to actuate the valve; when air is relieved an internal spring automatically returns the valve to its standard position. With optional Limit Stops, the valve can be set to open or close to any partial position.

Valve Features:

Valve Design:

The ABV- Series is a scotchyoke type design. The ABR- and ABM- Series are rack & pinion type design. The actuator works directly on the ball valve shaft, ball, and bottom trunnion.

The bottom trunnion design element is accomplished via a circular thermoplastic sleeve fitted into the bottom hole of the ball. This sleeve locks the ball into the base of the valve, much like the typical trunnion found in the True Blue 2-way valve. After over two decades of proven design superiority, Plast-O-Matic remains the only industrial thermoplastic ball valve manufacturer to employ the trunnion principle. "Blocking" type ball valves, no matter how well designed, will result in uneven strain on the ball and shaft as they are tightened and especially during flow & pressure conditions -- a misaligned ball eventually causes leaks. The trunnion design, on the other hand, assures a perfectly aligned ball.

Materials of Construction:

Ball valves are available in Geon PVC and Corzan CPVC, with PTFE seats. A 3-hole ball design is standard and prevents a momentary no-flow ("dead head") condition by briefly allowing flow from two ports. If liquids cannot be mixed, please consult factory for 3-way air actuated isolation valve. Seats are available in EPDM or VitonŽ. For complete specifications on the 3-way ball element, please refer to Series TMBV. Actuator is constructed of corrosion resistant thermoplastics. Seals are Buna-N. For optional materials, please consult factory.

Manual Override:

All 3-way Air x Air models have direct override to the ball valve shaft. Series TABVS (Air x Spring 1/2", 3/4", and 1") requires simple loosening of the spring prior to manual override. Series TABRS (Air x Spring 1-1/2" and 2") should be specified as TABMS if manual override is critical to the application.

Temperature and Pressure:

Pressure rating for both PVC and CPVC is 175 PSI at 75 degrees F (24 C). Maximum temperature for PVC is 140 degrees F (60 C); maximum temperature for CPVC is 180 degrees F (82 C).

Installation:

Air x Air models require a 4-way air solenoid valve; Air x Spring models require a 3-way air solenoid to control actuation. Compressed air should be filtered and lubricated.

IMPORTANT MUST READ: Model numbers listed above must be completed (in this order) with seal material, "V" for Viton or "EP" for EPDM; followed by connection type, "T" for threaded or "S" for socket; followed by a dash; followed by the valve body material, "PV" for Geon PVC or "CP" for Corzan CPVC. For example, a 1/2" threaded union Valve in PVC with Viton would be TABVA050VT-PV. For Air x Spring, simply change TABVA to TABVS or TABRA to TABRS. If TABRS with manual override is required, change part number to TABMS. Manual override is standard on all others. Note that overall height of TABMS is 14.8".

To obtain CFM required from compressor, multiply the chart CFM value times the number of required actuator cycles per hour. (1 cycle = 1 open, 1 close)
Example: For a 1.6 actuator using 50 PSI air pressure, with 12 cycles per hour required: Required CFM = .000357 x 12 = .004284 CFM.
*CFM is the cubic feet per minute of free air.
