Fundamentals of Token Ring
Networking with Token Ring is a sophisticated LAN technology that is largely used by IBM and is defined by the IEEE
802.5 standard.
Token Ring uses a star-wired topology
in which all workstations connect to a central Multi station Access Unit (MAU). This makes moving , changing, and adding equipment quick and easy.
Token Ring is fault-tolerant. If,
for example, the cable to one of your network PCs is damaged or cut, the MAU automatically bypasses that port. Because the logical ring stays intact, your network stays up.
Token Ring is
easy to connect to a mainframe. You can plug your network directly into an IBM AS400 or 3172 controller. (Added workstation software or a gateway may be necessary.)
Token Ring
support high speeds up to 16 Mbps. And you can connect up to 72 devices using low-cost unshielded twisted pair cable (Category 3, 4, 5) or up to 260 devices using shielded twisted-pair cable. |
